Twenty installation and maintenance

Tips useful to obtain the best result for outdoor flooring

WHY CHOOSE TWENTY

The Twenty high performance porcelain stoneware is the definitive solution that eliminates all problems related to traditional outdoor flooring: it remains unchanged over time, is resistant to sunlight, to frost and to staining substances.

The porcelain stoneware in slabs with thickness of 20 mm offers an innovative and functional solution for every type of outdoor flooring. Suitable for the flooring of gardens, terraces, drive-over areas and even beaches.

The Twenty slabs are self-supporting and extraordinarily versatile.
They offer multiple installation opportunities: dry supported, raised on plastic supports, glued for drive-over flooring.

GLUE DOWN INSTALLATION

Slabs glued on rigid screen for car and light vehicle drive-over courtyards and areas.

For large surfaces to be paved and which must have traffic characteristics, dry laying should be avoided. In these cases, installation must be performed with glue on a reinforced concrete screed.
Attention must be paid to the assessment of the load-bearing capacity of the substrate (straightened) and of the expected static and dynamic loads.
The outdoor laying of ceramic slabs requires particular care, as a laying defect or incorrect assessment of the bearing capacity of the substrate or of the loads acting on the flooring can result in breakage of the slabs.
Preliminary or preparatory works: The designer or the construction manager must prepare all the works and checks to ensure adequate load-bearing capacity of the substrate and of the screed on which to lay the ceramic material.

LAYING ON GRASS

Slabs resting on the  straightened, removable and repositionable. For parks and gardens, with side-by-side or irregular installation.

No specific skills are required for laying of the slabs on gravel, sand or soil.
Installation consists of an initial part of adequate preparation of the substrate and subsequent laying of the slab and its stabilisation.
The slab can then be lifted using a ceramic suction cup and repositioned.
Before laying, a careful assessment is recommended regarding:

  1. intended use and envisaged loads
  2. climatic conditions (strong wind could lift supported slabs – in particular be careful when laying in exposed areas or on raised terraces)
  3. types of dynamic loads.

Dry laying on gravel, earth or sand is suitable for areas with reduced static and dynamic stress, such as pedestrian or bicycle areas.

LAYING ON GRAVEL

The gravel sub-base offers stability and drainage, for garden flooring but also for terraces. Repositionable system.

No specific skills are required for laying of the slabs on gravel, sand or soil.

LAYING ON SAND

For catering areas and paths of seaside resorts and tourist villages. Solid, safe, it is resistant to sunlight and salt.

RAISED INSTALLATION

Practical modular and adjustable supports, on which to place inspectable slabs that conceal cables and pipes.

LAYING FLOATING FLOORING FOR OUTDOOR AREAS

Dry laying on supports offers numerous advantages, such as quick installation and the possibility of immediate inspection of the cavity to check the underlying pipes and cables and the substrate.
Furthermore, dry laying on terraces, compared to traditional glue laying on screed, improves the summer thermal comfort of the underlying areas and allows lightening of the weight on the underlying floor.
Before proceeding with laying of the floating floor, it is necessary to pay particular attention to the performance requirements and to the intended use of the area to be paved to be compared with the characteristics of the ceramic and the substrates chosen.
For installation at height on raised terraces, ideally request the advice of a qualified technician who is able to evaluate the actions of the wind, the static and dynamic loads permitted on the floor and the seismic actions based on current legislation and on the project requirements in order to avoid damage to persons and property.
